In honor of national Deaf Awareness Week, Pat Bruce was recognized as the 2008 Deaf/Hard of Hearing leader in Kentucky. The honor is sponsored by Hamilton Relay.

ASL videos provide facts about cancer

The University of California at San Diego has produced a series of videos in ASL that provide facts and detection methods for various tyeps of cancer. Topics covered in the videos include breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, prostate and testicular cancer. For more information about the series click here.

Learn more about ADA issues through ASL podcasts

The Southeast ADA Center has posted several podcasts online to help consumers understand the Americans with Disabilities Act. The podcasts are broadcast using ASL.

Time running out before broadcast signal change

Starting on Feb. 17, 2009, all television stations will switch their broadcast signals from analog to digital, requiring many televisions that get their signals through a rooftop antenna to get converter boxes to keep receiving a signal.
Each household is entitled to two $40 coupons to help purchase the new converter boxes. Other information about the conversion is also available through the FCC Web site.

The FCC has also produced several videos explaining topics related to the DTV transition in 2009, including closed captioning.

FCC releases report on E-911

In case of an emergency, dialing 911 from an IP relay or VRS is easier than one might think. Thanks to a new report and order from the FCC it is now possible to dial 911 through VRS or IP relay. This pair of videos explain the process.

Important information about the Economic Stimulus Package

Beginning in early May, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will begin sending out rebate checks as part of the nation's Economic Stimulus Package. NAD has partnered with the IRS to produce three ASL videos with English transcripts explaining the program with important tips.

In the News

An article recently appeared in the Community Recorder newspapers detailing the accomplishments of Kevin Schomaker, a student at Scott High School who was born with cerebral palsy and is hard of hearing. Schomaker plans to attend Northern Kentucky University in the fall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is looking for feedback from deaf and hard of hearing individuals related to their ASL Public Service Announcements (PSA) which are posted on their website.

Housing friendly to deaf and hard of hearing planned

Beginning in the fall of 2008, seniors in Kentucky will have more affordable housing options when Franciscan Senior Estates is complete. The 54-unit apartment building plans to have 12 with special features for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Shared Reading Project

The Shared Reading Project teaches parents and other caregivers how to read to their deaf or hard of hearing children using American Sign Language or PSE, giving the parents and other caregivers strategies to make book sharing more fun and effective.
